Here a 2x2 reactor config gets the output of 4 from the reactors PLUS an extra 8 output because of the neighbor bonuses, resulting in an equivalence of 12 reactors, using only 4 reactors! The goal is to get the highest number/bonus with the same number of reactors. Here I made several little diagrams where each square represents one reactor, and in each square is the bonus that reactor receives. Therefore, the greatest output a reactor could have is with 3 neighbors and an open side for automated refueling. Because the reactor has 4 sides, a single reactor can have at most 200MW power output, or 5x its 40MW output, but the greatest flaw with this is that fuel must be inserted manually since there is no space around the reactor.

This neighbor bonus, in essence, adds the power of each neighbor to itself. Then add the output of the other reactor and the power increased exponentially with a total of 160MW compared to the original 40MW. When two powered reactors are side-by-side, that same single nuclear reactor is now 80MW, or 8 exchangesand 14 turbines respectively.

People just see the "pros" using exclusively solar power and saying it's objectively the best choice, and everyone just follows them.As of this writing, power output for a single nuclear reactor is 40MW, which equates to approximately 4 heat exchanges and 7 turbines at full output. Like I said though, for 99% of players it's not a problem. Point being, when your factory has (literally) several thousand factories all with moving parts and constant CPU calculations, being able to use solar power and remove the CPU cost of the hundreds of coal belts and smoke clouds can give you a real benefit. Just a giant field of static, clean solar panels with zero moving parts. That's an massive amount of coal, water, and steam in the air all having to be calculated several times each second by your CPU. In these mega-factories, power generation becomes an issue when you have 500+ steam engines or even nuclear turbines. The big problem with large factories is when it comes to the CPU having to calculate every that happens with steam engines and their world. For 99% of players this isn't an issue since CPUs can easily handle several thousands of calculations, but the larger your factory the more of a concern this is. The problem is your game has to calculate, several times a second, the position of every item on every conveyor belt, as well as every fluid volume in every pipe. It's more an issue with "megafactories", like the 1% of people who go for literal game-breaking setups where they are making 1 million science production per minute, etc.Īt a point you end up hitting a virtual wall where your game speed just grinds to a halt.
